Electrician III

POSITION SUMMARY: 
Reporting to the Director of Facilities, the Electrician III is part of a team of Electricians responsible for the maintenance,  repair and improvement of the Academy’s electrical systems. This position provides feedback on projects, identifies maintenance tasks, schedules work and reviews team performance. The Electrician III is responsible for department purchasing, compliance, policy, staffing, scheduling, performance evaluations and safety. POSITION DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Install and maintain commercial lighting, power systems, motor controls and other specialized museum and aquarium electrical installations.
  • Plan electrical projects, estimate electrical labor, materials and methods. 
  • Order materials using Academy purchasing systems, follow budget and purchasing guidelines.
  • Read prints, as-builts, specifications and cut sheets, compose requests for information relating to electrical installations.
  • Supervise and schedule Journeyman Electricians and delegate tasks. 
  • Coordinate electrical project work with contractors and vendors.
  • Review work tickets, determine priority, schedule, assignments, follow up and make recommendations.
  • Identify personal protective equipment (PPE), complete hot work permits 
  • Act as electrical representative for the Academy Health and Safety Committee, develop risk assessments and communicate findings.
  • Follow all Academy safety regulations.
  • Provide feedback on electrical staff performance.
  • Other Electrical Department duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 
The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability preferred. 

EXPERIENCE and/or EDUCATION :
A qualified candidate will possess a combination of the following experience and/or equivalent education:  

  • Completion of a 5-year electrical apprentice-training program or equivalent and have current electrical certification(s) with the State of California. 
  • A minimum of 10 years journey level electrical experience, excluding apprenticeship or equivalent training.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: 

  • Knowledge of national and local electrical codes and NFPA standards for electrical safety in the workplace.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to communicate complex concepts and ideas.  

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, sit, walk, and reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear. Must be able to transport  45 lbs, walk a reasonable distance, and safely climb a ladder. Must be able to perform repetitive motions 90% of the time.
