About the Opportunity
Reporting to the Manager of School Programs, this position is responsible for facilitating the Academy’s implementation of multilingual, culturally relevant, and inclusive programming for K-8 student groups, whether onsite or online. This position facilitates classes in English and Cantonese, and requires a passion for accommodating students of all abilities, backgrounds, and identities. Approximately 20% of classes require some form of language support in Spanish, Cantonese, or Mandarin.

This position is based in San Francisco, California. Student programs are taught in-person at the museum. On days when teaching is not in-person, team members may have the option of working remotely from home. Team members are expected to convene in person for planning days, staff retreats, special events, or celebrations. Please do not apply if you are not able to work onsite. Candidates are required to have up-to-date COVID-19 vaccination, including receiving a booster shot, as a condition of employment, absent qualifying exemptions in accordance with applicable laws. About the Team
The goal of School Programs is to support schools with science education in a way that science and nature are relevant to students’ lives. The Educator works primarily with two programs: (1) the Rock Fund Program that provides equitable access for all San Francisco Elementary Schools, and includes teaching at the museum and in local parks; (2) the Distance Learning Program, which creates opportunities for students in California and beyond, who wouldn’t otherwise be able to visit a zoo, museum, or aquarium to engage in learning about the natural world via interactive video conferencing.

Key responsibilities

  • Facilitate science lessons in English and Cantonese for classes of students, both at the museum and online
  • Research, design, and revise educational programming for grades K-8 with internal and external collaborators
  • Ensure programs and activities are culturally relevant and responsive to learners needs
  • Work closely with the Student Programs Coordinator on logistics for scheduled programming, and distribution of digital and physical resources to teachers, students, and families
  • Prepare, coordinate and maintain supplies, educational materials, and workspaces
  • Conduct technical check-ins prior to online program delivery, and troubleshoot technical issues as they arise
  • Actively engage in regular staff meetings, programmatic evaluation and staff trainings
  • Coach volunteers and interns with the mentorship of the Manager of School Programs
  • Contribute to outreach efforts within the communities served by the program
  • Provide administrative support as needed
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned

Qualifications
EXPERIENCE

  • At least one year of experience in informal education or a formal classroom
  • Background in natural history and/or life sciences
  • Experience working with English Learners

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Bilingual fluency in Cantonese and English required; including reading, writing and speaking (technical level translation skills not required)
  • Excellent public presentation skills; comfortable speaking to large groups
  • Commitment to modifying environment to promote diversity and equity, and to provide inclusion and accessibility
  • Familiarity with student learning needs and developmentally appropriate expectations
  • Ability to perform library and web research of accurate science content
  • Superb attention to detail; organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Proficiency with Google Suite and Zoom - preferred

MANDATED REPORTER
This is a mandated reporter designated position. Academy employees whose duties include direct contact and supervision of children are deemed mandated reporters under California Law. Mandated reporters have certain specific reporting obligations in the event that they know of, observe or reasonably suspect that a child has been the victim of child abuse or neglect. The Academy provides mandated reporters with training of their rights and obligations under the Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act.

  • Ability to transport 25 lbs with the help of wheeled carts and wagons.
  • Ability to perform repetitive motions 50% of the time.
  • Ability to participate in outdoor, park-based activities.

Compensation and Benefits
Hourly hiring range: $26.00-$28.00 per hour. Hourly rate will vary based on experience and relevant skills/knowledge set. The Academy offers a total compensation package emphasizing base salary and comprehensive benefits.
Schedule: Applicants must be available Monday-Thursday. Occasional evening events are required, and will be known months in advance. This position is employed during the academic year, August 14, 2023 - May 31, 2024. This position is planned for 25 hours per week but could be flexible down to 20 hours per week for the right candidate.
